Picking the right hood size is the difference between a kitchen that feels balanced and one that feels off. Before you choose a finish or style, get the dimensions right — it affects both how the hood looks above your range and how well it clears smoke and steam.

What to consider before you buy

How to measure for the right fit

  1. Measure your cooktop from edge to edge
  2. Add a few inches on each side for better smoke capture
  3. Choose the closest standard hood width that covers it
  4. Confirm your ceiling height leaves room for the chimney
  5. Double-check clearance between the cooktop and the hood

As a rule of thumb, your hood should be at least as wide as your cooktop — and ideally a little wider. Going narrower looks undersized and reduces how effectively it captures steam and grease.

A hood should never be narrower than the cooktop it sits above.
