Picking the right hood size is the difference between a kitchen that feels balanced and one that feels off. Before you choose a finish or style, get the dimensions right — it affects both how the hood looks above your range and how well it clears smoke and steam.
What to consider before you buy
- Your cooktop or range width
- Ceiling height and how the hood will be mounted
- Whether you're ducted or ductless
- Noise level, measured in sones
- A finish that complements your cabinetry
How to measure for the right fit
- Measure your cooktop from edge to edge
- Add a few inches on each side for better smoke capture
- Choose the closest standard hood width that covers it
- Confirm your ceiling height leaves room for the chimney
- Double-check clearance between the cooktop and the hood
As a rule of thumb, your hood should be at least as wide as your cooktop — and ideally a little wider. Going narrower looks undersized and reduces how effectively it captures steam and grease.
A hood should never be narrower than the cooktop it sits above.
